Dog Swimming for Arthritis
Arthritic dogs are caught in a loop: it hurts to move, so they move less, so they lose muscle, so the joint is less supported and hurts more. Private 30-minute sessions in a heated indoor pool at Bretherton, Lancashire.
WHAT IT IS
Arthritis (osteoarthritis / degenerative joint disease) in plain English
Progressive wear of joint cartilage with inflammation of the joint capsule — the most common cause of chronic pain in older dogs and a frequent sequel to dysplasia or old injuries.
We are a canine swimming and hydro pool, not a veterinary practice — this page explains how our sessions fit alongside the care your vet provides.

WHY THE POOL HELPS
Why warm water suits this problem
Arthritic dogs are caught in a loop: it hurts to move, so they move less, so they lose muscle, so the joint is less supported and hurts more. Warm water breaks the loop by making movement comfortable enough to do properly.

RECOMMENDED SESSION
We'd start with the Swim Coach session
Fortnightly suits most arthritic dogs; some do better with a shorter weekly swim.
The commonly reported pattern is an easier day or two after each swim. That is a genuine and worthwhile outcome; it is not a cure for a degenerative condition.
YOUR FIRST VISIT
What the first session looks like
Slow entry down the ramp, plenty of standing time in the warm water before any real swimming, and a full towel-and-dryer session afterwards so nobody goes home cold and stiffening.
30 minutes
Arrive 10 minutes early
28–32°C water
Indoor, private pool
Towel & dryer
Included every visit
Before you book
Cold and damp are the enemy for arthritic dogs, which is why the drying matters as much as the swim. If your dog is on pain relief, keep giving it as prescribed — swimming is exercise, not a replacement for medication.
QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED
Arthritis: your questions
Is my dog too old to start swimming?
Age on its own is not the barrier — condition is. We see plenty of dogs starting in double figures. If there is heart or respiratory disease in the picture, check with your vet first.
How warm is the water?
28–32°C. That is deliberately warmer than a leisure pool because cold water makes arthritic joints guard rather than move.
Will my dog be cold going home?
No — every dog gets a towel-down and time with the hair dryer before they leave. In winter bring a warm coat for the car.
