Post-surgical
Dog Swimming for Muscle Wastage
Muscle only comes back if it is worked, and a sore limb will not be worked properly on land. Private 30-minute sessions in a heated indoor pool at Bretherton, Lancashire.
WHAT IT IS
Muscle Wastage (atrophy) in plain English
Loss of muscle bulk from disuse — after injury, surgery, crate rest or long-term lameness. Usually obvious as one back leg looking noticeably thinner than the other.
We are a canine swimming and hydro pool, not a veterinary practice — this page explains how our sessions fit alongside the care your vet provides.
WHY THE POOL HELPS
Why warm water suits this problem
Muscle only comes back if it is worked, and a sore limb will not be worked properly on land. Water lets you load the muscle while the joint stays unloaded.
RECOMMENDED SESSION
We'd start with the Swim Coach session
Weekly while rebuilding; muscle responds to frequency more than to long single sessions.
Thigh circumference measured at home with a tape, plus lengths completed here, gives you an honest picture over six to eight weeks.

YOUR FIRST VISIT
What the first session looks like
We establish a baseline — how many lengths before the stroke changes — and build from there rather than from a fixed programme.
30 minutes
Arrive 10 minutes early
28–32°C water
Indoor, private pool
Towel & dryer
Included every visit
Before you book
If the wastage is from an undiagnosed lameness, get the diagnosis first. Building muscle around an unidentified problem is not a plan.
For muscle wastage we need written clearance from your vet or surgeon before the first session.
QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED
Muscle Wastage: your questions
How long does muscle take to come back?
Weeks rather than days, and it depends on how long it was lost for and what caused it. Frequency of exercise matters more than the length of any single session.
Can you tell me if my dog is improving?
We can tell you what we see in the water — stroke quality, lengths completed, how quickly they tire. Clinical assessment is your vet's job.
Tell us about your dog's muscle wastage
Send us the details and your vet's advice and we'll tell you honestly whether swimming is the right fit — or call 07359 881320.
