Swimming for Flat-Faced (Brachycephalic) Breeds

French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Shar Pei, Bullmastiffs, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Boxers either have short muzzles, heavy fronts, or both. Many cannot keep themselves level in water. That does not rule swimming out, but it changes every part of how we run the session.

Why they sink at the back

A deep chest and dense muscle up front, short legs underneath and a compact body mean the back end drops the moment the dog stops paddling. Left unsupported they tire within seconds and panic. For the truly flat-faced breeds a fitted life jacket is compulsory here, and a Swim Coach session (£40) means one of our team is in the pool holding the dog level.

Breathing sets the clock

We watch breathing rather than the timer. Work comes in short bursts with rests on the ramp, and we stop at the first sign of noisier or harder breathing. Some dogs manage only ten minutes of actual swimming in a thirty-minute booking, and that is a good session for them.

The appeal for owners is that these dogs overheat easily on summer walks. An indoor pool with water well below body temperature lets them move without the same heat load, although we still keep effort modest.

Backs, knees and weight

French Bulldogs and some Shih Tzus are prone to disc problems; Pugs and Bulldogs to weight gain; Staffies and Boxers to cruciate injuries. Swimming removes jumping and twisting from the equation. If any of these have been diagnosed, please bring your vet's clearance.

Skin folds and drying

Shar Pei and Bulldogs have folds that trap water. We towel thoroughly, and it is worth drying between folds again at home. Long Shih Tzu coats need extra time under the dryer.

Staffies and Boxers often become strong swimmers once the ramp is learnt, and some drop the jacket after a few visits. The genuinely short-nosed breeds keep it for good.

Preparing a flat-faced dog for the visit

Book a cooler part of the day in summer, and keep the car journey calm and ventilated so your dog arrives relaxed rather than already panting. Avoid a big meal just before. Bring any vet notes about breathing, spinal or joint problems, and mention them when you book so the coach knows what to watch for.

Afterwards, expect a tired, sleepy dog. If breathing stays noisy or laboured for longer than normal after a session, contact your vet and let us know before the next booking. For this group the aim is safe, regular movement rather than distance or speed, and a short swim done well is worth far more than a long one pushed too far.

Flat-Faced (Brachycephalic) Breeds: owner questions

Can French Bulldogs swim?

Not unaided. With a fitted jacket and a coach in the water, many enjoy it safely.

Should my Pug see a vet first?

If there is any history of breathing trouble, collapse or heat intolerance, yes, please check before booking.

Do you supply jackets?

Yes, and we fit one before the dog goes near the water.

Usual starting point: Swim Coach (£40). See availability
