Dog Swimming for Brachycephalic Dogs

These dogs badly need exercise they can actually tolerate. Private 30-minute sessions in a heated indoor pool at Bretherton, Lancashire.

WHAT OWNERS NOTICE

Signs owners mention when they call us

noisy breathing at rest
overheating quickly on walks
back end sinking in water
exercise intolerance in warm weather

WHAT IT IS

Brachycephalic Dogs (flat-faced breeds) in plain English

Flat-faced breeds — French Bulldogs, Pugs, Bulldogs and similar — whose airway anatomy limits exercise tolerance and heat tolerance, and whose body shape makes them poor natural swimmers.

We are a canine swimming and hydro pool, not a veterinary practice — this page explains how our sessions fit alongside the care your vet provides.

HOW IT WORKS

What the water is actually doing

Indoor, temperature-controlled environment rather than a hot summer walk
Buoyancy aid keeps a dense, front-heavy body level in the water
Coach in the water at all times, watching breathing rather than the clock
Short intervals with rests, rather than continuous swimming

WHY THE POOL HELPS

Why warm water suits this problem

These dogs badly need exercise they can actually tolerate. In a temperature-controlled pool with a jacket and a coach at their side, they can work without overheating — but they need more supervision than any other group.

RECOMMENDED SESSION

We'd start with the Swim Coach session

Short sessions, fortnightly, adjusted to how the dog copes.

For this group the goal is safe, tolerable exercise — not distance.

Before you book

Flat-faced dogs are genuinely higher risk in water: heavy chests, short muzzles and compromised airways. We never leave them unsupported and we would rather cut a session short than push it.

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

Brachycephalic Dogs: your questions

Can French Bulldogs swim?

Not naturally — dense muscle, a heavy chest and short legs mean many sink at the back. With a fitted buoyancy aid and a coach in the water they can swim safely and enjoy it.

Do you fit a life jacket?

For brachycephalic dogs, yes, as standard.

Is a heated pool safe for a flat-faced dog?

The water is 28–32°C and the building is temperature-controlled, which is far more predictable than a warm-weather walk. We still keep sessions short and rest often.
