What Is Dog Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy — therapeutic exercise in warm water — has been used in human medicine for centuries. In the last two decades, it's become one of the fastest-growing areas of canine healthcare. At West Lancs K9 Splash, our heated indoor pool is maintained at 28–32°C, providing the perfect environment for therapeutic swimming.
1. Pain Relief Through Warm Water
Warm water increases blood flow to muscles and joints, naturally reducing pain and inflammation. Many dogs with chronic conditions like arthritis show visible improvement after just a few sessions. The warmth also helps relax muscle spasms and reduce stiffness — owners often tell us their dog moves more freely for days after each swim.
2. Low-Impact Joint Exercise
Water buoyancy supports up to 90% of a dog's body weight, dramatically reducing stress on joints. This allows dogs with painful conditions to exercise comfortably and build strength without the jarring impact of walking or running. For post-surgery patients, this means earlier, safer return to activity.
3. Muscle Building & Strength
Water provides 15 times more resistance than air, meaning every movement in the pool works harder than the same movement on land. This builds lean muscle mass efficiently — crucial for supporting damaged joints and preventing future injuries. Dogs typically show measurable muscle gain after 4 –6 weeks of regular sessions.
4. Improved Range of Motion
In the pool, dogs naturally use a wider range of motion than on land. The freedom of movement in warm water encourages arthritic dogs to extend their limbs fully, maintaining joint flexibility that would otherwise deteriorate. Over time, this improved range of motion carries over to their movement on land.
5. Cardiovascular Fitness
Swimming is an excellent cardiovascular workout. For overweight dogs or those with mobility limitations, swimming provides the intense cardiovascular exercise they need without the physical barriers that prevent them from exercising on land. Heart and lung capacity improve measurably with regular sessions.
6. Weight Management
A 30-minute swim can burn the same calories as a 90-minute walk. For overweight dogs — and around 50% of UK dogs are estimated to be overweight — swimming is the most effective and safest way to shed excess weight. Our Weighty Woofers programme combines swimming with weigh-ins and progress tracking.
7. Mental Health & Wellbeing
Swimming isn't just physical therapy — it's mental therapy too. Dogs who are frustrated by reduced mobility often show renewed enthusiasm and confidence in the pool. The endorphin release from exercise, combined with the sensory stimulation of water, leaves dogs calmer, happier, and more relaxed at home.
