The Short Answer
Puppies can start swimming from 12 weeks old, provided they've completed their second vaccination course. At West Lancs K9 Splash, we welcome puppies from this age and have introduced hundreds of young dogs to water safely and gently in our heated indoor pool.
Why Wait Until 12 Weeks?
Before their second vaccination (usually given at 10–12 weeks), puppies aren't fully protected against diseases like parvovirus and leptospirosis, which can be transmitted through water. Our pool is rigorously maintained and treated, but we follow veterinary best practice and require proof of vaccination before a puppy's first session.
The Critical Socialisation Window
Behaviourists agree that the period between 8–16 weeks is the critical socialisation window for puppies. Positive experiences during this time shape a dog's behaviour for life. Introducing your puppy to water between 12–16 weeks gives them the best chance of becoming a confident, happy swimmer who loves the water.
How We Introduce Puppies to Water
Every puppy is different. Some bound straight into the pool; others prefer a gentler approach. Our pool features a gradual ramp entry, letting puppies walk in at their own pace. The water is heated to 28–32°C — warm enough to prevent cold shock. And every session is completely private, so there are no bigger dogs to intimidate your puppy.
What to Expect at the First Session
Plan to arrive 10 minutes early. We'll do a quick health check and chat about your puppy's temperament. The session is 30 minutes, but we'll let your puppy set the pace — some spend 20 minutes swimming, others prefer to spend time getting comfortable around the water first. Both are perfectly fine.
Benefits of Early Swimming
Puppies who swim regularly develop stronger muscles, better coordination, and more confidence. Swimming is particularly beneficial for large breed puppies — Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds — where low-impact exercise protects growing joints from the damage that excessive running can cause.
Owner In Pool vs Swim Coach
For puppies, we offer both options. Many owners love getting in the pool with their puppy — it strengthens your bond and helps your puppy feel secure. Alternatively, our Swim Coach option means a trained team member is in the water guiding your puppy throughout. Both work brilliantly for first-timers.
