Why Regular Walks Matter

Walking is the foundation of your dog's physical and mental health. Combined with swimming sessions, a good walking routine keeps your dog fit, socialised, and happy. Here are our top picks for dog-friendly walks near Preston.

1. Avenham & Miller Parks

Right in the heart of Preston, these beautifully maintained Victorian parks run along the River Ribble. Dogs are welcome on leads in the formal gardens, and there's a large off-lead area near the riverside. The paths are well-surfaced and suitable for all weather. Perfect for a morning walk before heading to us for a swim.

2. The Ribble Way

This long-distance footpath follows the River Ribble from its source to the estuary. The sections near Preston — particularly from Avenham Park towards Higher Brockholes — offer stunning riverside walking with plenty of spots for your dog to paddle. About 20 minutes from our pool at Bretherton.

3. Beacon Fell Country Park

A 25-minute drive north of Preston, Beacon Fell offers 110 hectares of moorland, woodland, and fell walking. Dogs are welcome and the variety of terrain provides excellent exercise and mental stimulation. The summit gives panoramic views across the Fylde coast and Morecambe Bay.

4. Brockholes Nature Reserve

Just off the M6 at junction 31, Brockholes combines lakeside walks with woodland trails. Dogs on leads are welcome on most paths. The floating visitor centre is worth a visit, and the reserve offers about 3 miles of waymarked trails.

5. Cuerden Valley Park

Between Preston and Chorley, Cuerden Valley Park has 650 acres of woodland, grassland, and ponds. The paths range from easy surfaced trails to more adventurous woodland routes. Dogs are welcome throughout, and the park is just 15 minutes from our Bretherton pool.

6. Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve

A hidden gem just south of Preston, this former brickworks is now a peaceful nature reserve with circular walks around ponds and through woodland. Quiet, flat, and perfect for older dogs or those recovering from injury — a great complement to our hydrotherapy sessions.

7. Haighton Green Lane & the Guild Wheel

Preston's Guild Wheel is a 21-mile cycling and walking route that circles the city. The section along Haighton Green Lane offers quiet countryside walking with views towards Longridge Fell. Dogs love the open fields and hedgerow-lined paths.

8. Worden Park, Leyland

A beautiful 157-acre park in Leyland with formal gardens, woodland, a maze, and open grassland. Dogs on leads in the formal areas, off-lead in the meadows. Only 10 minutes from our pool — many of our clients combine a Worden walk with a swimming session.

9. Yarrow Valley Country Park

Located between Chorley and Coppull, Yarrow Valley follows the River Yarrow through woodland and wetland. The 700-acre park has well-maintained paths and is excellent for dogs who enjoy water — though we'd always recommend our warm, clean pool over a muddy river!

10. Hurst Grange Park, Penwortham

A compact but lovely park in Penwortham with ancient woodland, a pond, and well-surfaced paths. Ideal for a quick walk with your dog before or after a swimming session. Just 15 minutes from West Lancs K9 Splash.

Complement Your Walks With Swimming

Walking is great, but swimming provides a full-body workout that walking simply can't match. A 30-minute swim burns as many calories as a 90-minute walk — with zero joint impact. Many Preston dog owners combine regular walks with weekly swimming sessions at our heated indoor pool in Bretherton, just 15 minutes away.
