Dog Swimming for Elbow Dysplasia
The front legs take roughly 60% of a dog's standing weight, so an elbow problem is punished by every step on land. Private 30-minute sessions in a heated indoor pool at Bretherton, Lancashire.
WHAT IT IS
Elbow Dysplasia in plain English
An umbrella term for several developmental problems in the elbow joint — fragmented coronoid process, OCD lesions, ununited anconeal process — that leave the joint incongruent and painful.
We are a canine swimming and hydro pool, not a veterinary practice — this page explains how our sessions fit alongside the care your vet provides.

WHY THE POOL HELPS
Why warm water suits this problem
The front legs take roughly 60% of a dog's standing weight, so an elbow problem is punished by every step on land. Swimming is one of the few ways to give the front end a genuine workout with the weight taken off it.

RECOMMENDED SESSION
We'd start with the Swim Coach session
Weekly during a conditioning block, then maintenance every two to three weeks.
Improvement here shows up in stroke quality and in how long the dog stays comfortable after a walk, rather than in anything dramatic on the day.
YOUR FIRST VISIT
What the first session looks like
We watch the front stroke closely on the first swim — a dog splashing hard with a stiff elbow is not getting the benefit, so the coach slows the pace and shortens the swim until the stroke is smooth.

Before you book
Elbow dysplasia is frequently managed alongside medication or surgery. We do not adjust anything your vet has prescribed and we will not swim a dog that is acutely lame that week.
For elbow dysplasia we need written clearance from your vet or surgeon before the first session.
QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED
Elbow Dysplasia: your questions
Is swimming better than lead walking for elbow dysplasia?
It is a different job. Controlled lead walking keeps the joint used; swimming lets you add real cardiovascular and muscular work on top without adding impact. Most dogs do best with both.
Will my dog use their front legs properly in the water?
That is exactly what the coach is in the pool to check. If the front stroke is guarded we adjust support and duration rather than push through it.
