Southport — Coastal Walks & Hidden Gems
Southport's location on the Sefton Coast means dog owners have access to some of the finest coastal walking in England. From vast sandy beaches to ancient pine woods, here are our top picks — plus a reminder that our warm, clean pool at Bretherton is just 25 minutes inland when the weather turns.
1. Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve
One of the largest sand dune systems in England. Dogs are welcome on leads between the car park and beach, and off-lead on the beach itself during permitted months. The dune landscape is unique and provides incredible sensory stimulation for dogs. Check seasonal restrictions — some areas are protected for nesting birds.
2. Formby Beach & Red Squirrel Reserve
The National Trust beach at Formby is one of the most popular dog walks in the region. Miles of sandy beach with dramatic dune cliffs. Dogs on leads in the squirrel reserve; off-lead on the beach. Note: the car park fills quickly on sunny weekends — arrive early.
3. Hesketh Park
Southport's beautiful Victorian park offers formal gardens, a lake, and woodland walks. Dogs on leads throughout, but it's a lovely, sheltered walk for days when the coast is too windy. The park is flat and accessible, making it suitable for older dogs.
4. Marshside RSPB Reserve (Perimeter)
While dogs aren't permitted inside the reserve, the perimeter paths along the estuary offer fantastic open walking with views across the marshes. Great for birdwatching while walking your dog. The flat terrain suits all fitness levels.
5. Botanic Gardens & Churchtown
Southport's Botanic Gardens offer a compact but beautiful walk through historic gardens and woodland. The nearby village of Churchtown has charming streets and the Meols Hall estate, where dogs can enjoy the surrounding parkland.
6. The Coastal Road to Crossens
The path along the coast road from Southport towards Crossens and Hesketh Bank offers wide-open walking with views across the Ribble Estuary. On clear days you can see the Lake District and Blackpool Tower. The path eventually connects to routes near our Bretherton base.
7. Mere Brow & the Ribble Estuary
Heading inland from Southport towards Mere Brow, quiet country lanes and footpaths cross agricultural land with views of the estuary. This area is peaceful, rarely crowded, and perfect for dogs who prefer quiet walks away from other dogs.
8. Sefton Coastal Path
A 21-mile waymarked route from Crosby to Southport along the coast. You don't need to walk the whole thing — pick a section and enjoy. The stretches through Ainsdale and Birkdale are particularly dog-friendly with easy beach access.
