How Often Should Dogs Swim?

Weekly for fitness, twice-weekly for rehab, three times for weight loss — here's our guide to swimming frequency for every goal.

It Depends on Your Goal

There's no single answer to how often your dog should swim. The ideal frequency depends on why they're swimming — general fitness, rehabilitation, weight management, or therapeutic reasons. Here's our recommendation for each scenario.

General Fitness: Once a Week

For healthy dogs swimming for general fitness and fun, once a week is ideal. A weekly 30-minute session provides enough cardiovascular exercise and muscle building to complement your daily walks. This is the most popular frequency among our regular clients.

Rehabilitation: 1–2 Times Per Week

Dogs recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions benefit most from 1–2 sessions per week. This frequency allows for progressive muscle building while giving tissues time to recover between sessions. Most rehabilitation programmes run for 8–12 weeks.

Weight Loss: 2–3 Times Per Week

For overweight dogs, more frequent sessions accelerate results. Our Weighty Woofers programme recommends 2–3 sessions per week, combined with dietary changes. At this frequency, most dogs show measurable weight loss within 3–4 weeks.

Arthritis Management: Weekly

Dogs with arthritis benefit from consistent weekly sessions. The regular warm-water exercise maintains muscle mass, keeps joints mobile, and provides ongoing pain relief. Many owners find that skipping a week leads to a noticeable return of stiffness.

Puppies: Fortnightly to Weekly

For puppies building water confidence, we recommend starting fortnightly and moving to weekly once they're comfortable. Session intensity should be lighter for growing puppies — we'll adjust the duration and pace to suit their age and size.

Can Dogs Swim Too Much?

Yes, though it's rare in a controlled environment like ours. We limit sessions to 30 minutes, which is the optimal duration for most dogs. Very young, elderly, or unwell dogs may benefit from shorter sessions. We'll always advise on the right duration for your individual dog.
