5 Signs Your Dog Needs Hydrotherapy

Stiffness after rest, reluctance to jump, weight gain — here are five signs that your dog could benefit from hydrotherapy sessions.

When to Consider Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy isn't just for dogs recovering from surgery. Many dogs develop conditions gradually, and owners often don't realise how much their dog could benefit from therapeutic swimming until they see the signs. Here are five indicators that your dog might benefit from our hydrotherapy sessions.

1. Stiffness After Rest

If your dog is slow to get up after sleeping, takes a few minutes to 'warm up' on walks, or seems stiff first thing in the morning, this is often an early sign of arthritis or joint degeneration. Warm-water swimming increases blood flow to stiff joints, providing relief that can last for days after each session.

2. Reluctance to Jump or Climb Stairs

A dog that used to leap onto the sofa but now hesitates, or avoids stairs they once bounded up, is telling you something. Joint pain or muscle weakness is making these movements uncomfortable. Swimming builds the muscle strength needed to support these movements while the warm water provides pain relief.

3. Weight Gain Despite Walking

Some dogs gain weight even with regular walks — particularly if they have a condition that limits their exercise intensity. Swimming burns calories 3x more efficiently than walking and can be tailored to your dog's fitness level. Our Weighty Woofers programme has helped hundreds of dogs reach a healthy weight.

4. Reduced Interest in Play

A dog that used to chase balls enthusiastically but now watches from the sideline may be experiencing pain that makes explosive movement uncomfortable. Swimming allows dogs to exercise intensely without the sudden stops, starts, and impacts that make land-based play painful.

5. Post-Surgery Recovery

If your dog has had orthopaedic surgery — cruciate repair, hip replacement, spinal surgery — hydrotherapy is one of the most effective ways to rebuild strength and mobility. Most vets recommend starting hydrotherapy 2–3 weeks after surgery. We work closely with veterinary practices across Lancashire to support rehabilitation programmes.
