Cruciate Recovery Swimming Near Dunnockshaw
Many Dunnockshaw vets have used our pool for years specifically because the post-op dogs come back with more muscle, better range of motion, and fewer setbacks.
Located at Pompian Brow Farm in Bretherton — just 21 miles (30 min drive) from Dunnockshaw.
COMMON CONCERNS
Recognise These Signs in Your Dunnockshaw Dog?
Slow Recovery
If your dog's recovery from surgery isn't progressing as fast as expected, swimming can accelerate muscle rebuilding and restore range of motion.
Lost Cardiovascular Fitness
Weeks of rest decondition the heart and lungs. Swimming rebuilds cardiovascular fitness safely alongside muscular rehabilitation.
Risk of Re-Injury
Returning to normal exercise too soon risks re-injury. Swimming provides intense rehabilitation in a completely controlled, zero-impact environment.
Expensive vet bills and medication only manage symptoms. Swimming addresses the root cause.

FOR DUNNOCKSHAW DOGS
The First Three Weeks Set the Tone
Early-stage rehab is where the biggest mistakes happen — too much, too soon, and the surgical repair pays for it. We deliberately under-do the first one or two sessions, especially for cruciate and spinal cases coming in from Dunnockshaw.
From session three onward, intensity builds based on response, not a fixed schedule. Some Dunnockshaw dogs progress fast; others need an extra week at each stage. Both paths reach the same place — we just won't rush the journey.
Accelerated Recovery
Swimming rebuilds muscle mass faster than any land-based exercise, getting your dog back to normal function sooner.
Breakthrough Plateaus
When recovery stalls with rest alone, swimming provides the stimulus needed to break through and continue progressing.
Expert Supervision
Swim Coach sessions put a trained team member in the water with your dog, guiding every movement for maximum therapeutic benefit.

WHY DOG OWNERS VISIT US
What Dunnockshaw Dog Owners Come to Us For
Cruciate Ligament Recovery (TPLO/TTA)
Post-cruciate surgery, swimming rebuilds quadriceps and hamstrings safely while protecting the repair. The most common rehab case we see.
Building Confidence in Repaired Limbs
Many post-surgery dogs become reluctant to use the affected limb. Buoyancy gives them confidence to move it again.
Fracture Recovery
Once fixation has healed, swimming rebuilds the muscle wasted during immobilisation — much faster than walking allows.
Spinal Surgery Rehabilitation
Following hemilaminectomy or other spinal procedures, water buoyancy supports the spine while allowing controlled limb movement.
Preventing Re-Injury
Returning to full land exercise too quickly is a leading cause of re-injury. Swimming bridges the gap with intensity but no impact.
Working With Lancashire Vets on Your Dog's Recovery
We're happy to receive referral notes from any vet in Lancashire, follow post-operative guidance, and send progress updates back. Many Dunnockshaw practices have used us for years specifically because of how well rehab dogs do here.

Post-Cruciate Surgery Owners
TPLO, TTA, and lateral suture recoveries are our most common rehab cases. Vets across Lancashire refer here specifically.
Soft Tissue Injury Owners
Tendon and ligament injuries heal better with controlled swimming than with rest alone.
Re-Injury Prevention Owners
Owners who've watched a previous recovery fail because of returning to land exercise too soon — and want to do it right this time.
Amputation Adaptation
Three-legged dogs build compensatory muscle quickly in the pool — and stay balanced as they adapt to a new normal.
YOUR QUESTIONS
Common Questions From Dunnockshaw
"What if my dog can't swim at all?"
Many dogs who visit us have never swum before — that's perfectly fine. We use life jackets, gradual ramp entry, and gentle encouragement. Swimming is a natural instinct for most dogs; they just need the right introduction.
"What ages of dog do you accept?"
From 12-week-old puppies (after second vaccination) to senior dogs of any age. We adjust every session to your dog's ability. Some of our most enthusiastic swimmers are well into their teens!
"Is the pool big enough for large breeds?"
Absolutely. We welcome everything from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. The pool has adjustable depths and ample space for even the largest breeds to swim comfortably.
"What do I need to bring?"
Just your dog and a towel. If you're doing Owner In Pool, bring swimwear too. We provide life jackets, toys, and everything else needed. Free parking means you don't even need change for a meter.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Your Dunnockshaw Swimming Questions, Answered
Can swimming help after amputation?
Yes — swimming is excellent for amputee dogs. It helps them build compensatory muscle, improve balance and coordination, and maintain cardiovascular fitness without overloading remaining limbs.
What if my dog is still in pain after surgery?
Warm water (28–32°C) actually helps manage post-surgical pain by increasing blood flow, reducing muscle tension, and providing gentle movement. Many dogs are visibly more comfortable after swimming.
What if my dog is in too much pain to swim?
We assess on arrival. If swimming would push them, we use the ramp and shallow walking instead. Nothing is forced for any rehab dog from Dunnockshaw.
How many rehab sessions will my dog need?
A typical post-surgery rehabilitation programme involves 1–2 sessions per week for 8–12 weeks, though this varies based on the surgery and your vet's recommendations.
Is post-surgery swimming covered by pet insurance?
Many pet insurance policies cover hydrotherapy when referred by a vet. Contact your insurer with details — we can provide session records and progress notes to support claims.
Will someone supervise my dog during rehab swimming?
For rehabilitation, we strongly recommend our Swim Coach option (£40) — a trained team member is in the water throughout, guiding your dog's movements for maximum therapeutic benefit.
How far is your rehab pool from Dunnockshaw?
Just 30 minutes from Dunnockshaw. Vets across Lancashire refer post-surgery patients to our heated pool at Pompian Brow Farm, PR26 9AQ.
