RECOGNISE THE SIGNS?
Common Challenges Astley Dog Owners Face
Joints Under Strain
Every extra kilo puts 4x more force on your dog's joints. Walking an overweight dog can actually cause more harm — swimming removes that strain entirely.
Diets Not Working Alone
Diet changes help, but exercise is essential for healthy weight loss. Swimming burns 5x more calories than walking without any joint impact.
Lost Enthusiasm for Walks
If your dog has stopped enjoying walks, pain from excess weight is likely the cause. Swimming removes that pain and makes exercise enjoyable again.
Expensive vet bills and medication only manage symptoms. Swimming addresses the root cause.

WHY CHOOSE US
Why Free Weigh-Ins Matter More Than They Sound
Most Astley owners genuinely don't know what their dog weighs week to week — vet scales are an occasional snapshot, home scales rarely cooperate with a wriggling dog. Free weigh-ins at every Weighty Woofers session give you a real trendline, not a vibe.
That data does two things: it keeps everyone honest about diet, and it lets us tune sessions as fitness improves. An overweight dog from Astley who's now down 4kg needs a different session than they did at the start, and we adjust accordingly.
Free Weigh-Ins
Every Weighty Woofers session includes a free weigh-in so you can track progress and celebrate milestones.
Zero Joint Impact
Every extra kilo puts 4x force on joints during walking. Swimming removes this impact entirely, protecting already-strained joints.
Enjoyable Exercise
Dogs love swimming! Unlike restrictive exercise regimes, our sessions are genuinely fun — your dog won't know they're working out.

GOOD TO KNOW
Before You Visit — Your Questions Answered
"What if my dog doesn't like it?"
In our experience, the vast majority of dogs take to our warm pool quickly. We never force dogs into the water — they enter at their own pace via a gentle ramp. The warm temperature makes it inviting rather than intimidating.
"What ages of dog do you accept?"
From 12-week-old puppies (after second vaccination) to senior dogs of any age. We adjust every session to your dog's ability. Some of our most enthusiastic swimmers are well into their teens!
"Can my dog swim if they're on medication?"
Usually yes — but always mention any medication when booking. Some medications may need timing adjustments around swimming. We'll check with you and advise accordingly.
"Do I need to change my dog's food too?"
Swimming amplifies the effect of dietary changes — but exercise alone can also drive significant fat loss. We're happy to chat about feeding portions and refer you to a vet nutritionist if needed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Your Astley Swimming Questions, Answered
Can my dog lose weight just by swimming without changing diet?
Swimming alone will help, but the best results come from combining regular swimming with dietary adjustments recommended by your vet. We focus on the exercise side — your vet handles nutrition.
Realistically, how much weight can my dog lose?
Combined with diet, dogs from Astley typically lose 0.5–1% of body weight per week safely. We've helped some lose 20%+ of starting weight over a structured 12-week block.
Do I have to be in the pool with my overweight dog?
Not at all. Our Swim Coach session puts one of our team in the water so you can watch from poolside — ideal if you'd rather not get changed every visit from Astley.
My vet says my dog needs to lose weight — can you help?
Absolutely. Our Weighty Woofers programme is designed for exactly this. Many vets across Greater Manchester recommend us as the exercise component of their weight management plans.
How overweight does my dog need to be for Weighty Woofers?
Any dog carrying extra weight can benefit. Your vet can advise on ideal weight, and our programme is designed to help dogs lose weight safely through swimming — the most effective low-impact exercise available.
How much weight can my dog lose through swimming?
Results vary by breed and starting weight, but we regularly see dogs lose 1–2kg per month with weekly sessions combined with diet management. Some dogs have lost over 5kg in our programme.
Can my dog still enjoy swimming even though it's for weight loss?
Dogs love our pool! Weighty Woofers sessions are fun — your dog won't know they're exercising for health reasons. They'll just know they had a brilliant time in warm water.
