Rehab Swimming Near Staining
Post-op rehab is where careful timing matters most. We follow your Staining vet's discharge notes to the letter and build intensity only when the recovery timeline allows it.
Located at Pompian Brow Farm in Bretherton — just 12.5 miles (20 min drive) from Staining.
WHY DOGS NEED MORE
Recognise These Signs in Your Staining Dog?
Slow Recovery
If your dog's recovery from surgery isn't progressing as fast as expected, swimming can accelerate muscle rebuilding and restore range of motion.
Risk of Re-Injury
Returning to normal exercise too soon risks re-injury. Swimming provides intense rehabilitation in a completely controlled, zero-impact environment.
Recovery Has Plateaued
When improvement stalls with rest alone, swimming provides the stimulus needed to break through recovery plateaus and continue progressing.
Expensive vet bills and medication only manage symptoms. Swimming addresses the root cause.

WHY CHOOSE US
The First Three Weeks Set the Tone
Early-stage rehab is where the biggest mistakes happen — too much, too soon, and the surgical repair pays for it. We deliberately under-do the first one or two sessions, especially for cruciate and spinal cases coming in from Staining.
From session three onward, intensity builds based on response, not a fixed schedule. Some Staining dogs progress fast; others need an extra week at each stage. Both paths reach the same place — we just won't rush the journey.
Breakthrough Plateaus
When recovery stalls with rest alone, swimming provides the stimulus needed to break through and continue progressing.
Progress Monitoring
We track your dog's recovery at each session — range of motion, endurance, muscle development — and share updates with your vet.
Muscle Preservation
Dogs lose muscle mass shockingly fast during cage rest. Swimming starts rebuilding strength as soon as your vet gives clearance.

WHY DOG OWNERS VISIT US
What Staining Dog Owners Come to Us For
Fracture Recovery
Once fixation has healed, swimming rebuilds the muscle wasted during immobilisation — much faster than walking allows.
Preventing Re-Injury
Returning to full land exercise too quickly is a leading cause of re-injury. Swimming bridges the gap with intensity but no impact.
Spinal Surgery Rehabilitation
Following hemilaminectomy or other spinal procedures, water buoyancy supports the spine while allowing controlled limb movement.
Cruciate Ligament Recovery (TPLO/TTA)
Post-cruciate surgery, swimming rebuilds quadriceps and hamstrings safely while protecting the repair. The most common rehab case we see.
Vet-Coordinated Recovery Programmes
We work alongside your Lancashire vet's recovery plan, providing progress updates and adjusting sessions to match the surgical timeline.
Why Swimming Beats Cage Rest Alone
Strict rest is sometimes necessary, but extended inactivity causes muscle wasting that delays recovery. Once your vet clears controlled exercise, swimming starts rebuilding strength immediately — many Staining owners say their dog's recovery accelerated visibly the week sessions began.

Vet-Coordinated Cases
Owners working closely with a Lancashire vet on a structured recovery plan — we coordinate sessions to match the surgical timeline.
Spinal Surgery Patients
Hemilaminectomy and other spinal procedures recover faster with the supported, controlled movement water provides.
Hip Replacement Recoveries
After THR, controlled swimming restores range of motion and rebuilds gluteal strength essential for normal gait.
Soft Tissue Injury Owners
Tendon and ligament injuries heal better with controlled swimming than with rest alone.
YOUR QUESTIONS
Your Questions, Answered
"Is it really better than outdoor swimming?"
Night and day. Our pool is heated to 28–32°C, filtered and treated for hygiene, has no currents or hidden hazards, and is available all year round regardless of weather. Plus it's completely private — no other dogs to stress yours.
"Will hydrotherapy interfere with my dog's medication?"
Hydrotherapy complements medication — it doesn't interfere with it. Many dogs see medication reductions after regular swimming because the root causes (weak muscles, stiff joints) are being addressed.
"What ages of dog do you accept?"
From 12-week-old puppies (after second vaccination) to senior dogs of any age. We adjust every session to your dog's ability. Some of our most enthusiastic swimmers are well into their teens!
"What if my dog doesn't like it?"
In our experience, the vast majority of dogs take to our warm pool quickly. We never force dogs into the water — they enter at their own pace via a gentle ramp. The warm temperature makes it inviting rather than intimidating.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Your Staining Swimming Questions, Answered
Will my dog regain full function after surgery with swimming?
While outcomes depend on the surgery and individual dog, swimming significantly improves the chances of full recovery. We've seen many dogs return to normal activity levels through consistent swimming rehabilitation.
How far is your rehab pool from Staining?
Just 20 minutes from Staining. Vets across Lancashire refer post-surgery patients to our heated pool at Pompian Brow Farm, PR26 9AQ.
How many rehab sessions will my dog need?
A typical post-surgery rehabilitation programme involves 1–2 sessions per week for 8–12 weeks, though this varies based on the surgery and your vet's recommendations.
How quickly does swimming help after surgery?
Most owners and vets see measurable improvement within 3–4 sessions. Muscle mass begins rebuilding immediately, and most dogs show improved range of motion within 2 weeks of starting.
How soon after surgery can my dog start swimming?
Most vets recommend starting 10–14 days after suture removal, once wounds are fully healed. We always require vet clearance before beginning any post-surgical swimming programme.
Will someone supervise my dog during rehab swimming?
For rehabilitation, we strongly recommend our Swim Coach option (£40) — a trained team member is in the water throughout, guiding your dog's movements for maximum therapeutic benefit.
My dog had spinal surgery — is swimming safe?
Swimming is excellent for post-spinal surgery rehabilitation. The buoyancy supports the spine while allowing gentle, controlled movement that helps maintain nerve pathways and rebuild core strength.
