Canine Rehabilitation Near Mere
Many Mere vets have used our pool for years specifically because the post-op dogs come back with more muscle, better range of motion, and fewer setbacks.
Located at Pompian Brow Farm in Bretherton — just 29.7 miles (35 min drive) from Mere.
COMMON CONCERNS
Why Mere Walks Alone Aren't Enough Anymore
Fear of Movement After Surgery
Some dogs become reluctant to use a surgically repaired limb. The buoyancy of water gives them confidence to move it again, building trust in their body.
Lost Cardiovascular Fitness
Weeks of rest decondition the heart and lungs. Swimming rebuilds cardiovascular fitness safely alongside muscular rehabilitation.
Cage Rest Frustration
Dogs on cage rest become frustrated, anxious, and depressed. Swimming sessions give them controlled activity and mental stimulation during recovery.
Expensive vet bills and medication only manage symptoms. Swimming addresses the root cause.

FOR MERE DOGS
Post-Surgery Swimming for Mere Dogs
Every rehabilitation case is different. We review your vet's post-operative instructions and design a swimming programme that complements your dog's recovery timeline. We start gently and progressively increase duration and intensity as strength returns.
Dogs recovering from cruciate repair, hip replacement, spinal surgery, fracture repair, and amputation all benefit from our pool. We've helped dogs from Mere and across Cheshire return to full function through consistent, targeted swimming rehabilitation.
Muscle Preservation
Dogs lose muscle mass shockingly fast during cage rest. Swimming starts rebuilding strength as soon as your vet gives clearance.
Expert Supervision
Swim Coach sessions put a trained team member in the water with your dog, guiding every movement for maximum therapeutic benefit.
Zero Re-Injury Risk
Water provides intense exercise in a completely controlled, zero-impact environment — no risk of re-injury during rehabilitation.

WHY DOG OWNERS VISIT US
What Mere Dog Owners Come to Us For
Spinal Surgery Rehabilitation
Following hemilaminectomy or other spinal procedures, water buoyancy supports the spine while allowing controlled limb movement.
Building Confidence in Repaired Limbs
Many post-surgery dogs become reluctant to use the affected limb. Buoyancy gives them confidence to move it again.
Hip Replacement Recovery
After total hip replacement, controlled swimming restores range of motion and rebuilds the gluteal muscles essential for normal gait.
Preventing Re-Injury
Returning to full land exercise too quickly is a leading cause of re-injury. Swimming bridges the gap with intensity but no impact.
Soft Tissue Injury Recovery
Tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries heal better with controlled exercise. Water provides resistance without the impact of land work.
Why Swimming Beats Cage Rest Alone
Strict rest is sometimes necessary, but extended inactivity causes muscle wasting that delays recovery. Once your vet clears controlled exercise, swimming starts rebuilding strength immediately — many Mere owners say their dog's recovery accelerated visibly the week sessions began.
WHO SWIMS WITH US
Dog Owners From Mere Who Visit Our Pool
Vet-Coordinated Cases
Owners working closely with a Cheshire vet on a structured recovery plan — we coordinate sessions to match the surgical timeline.
Re-Injury Prevention Owners
Owners who've watched a previous recovery fail because of returning to land exercise too soon — and want to do it right this time.
Post-Cruciate Surgery Owners
TPLO, TTA, and lateral suture recoveries are our most common rehab cases. Vets across Cheshire refer here specifically.
Fracture Recovery Cases
Once fixation has healed, swimming rebuilds wasted muscle far faster than walking — without loading the repair site.
GOOD TO KNOW
Your Questions, Answered
"What ages of dog do you accept?"
From 12-week-old puppies (after second vaccination) to senior dogs of any age. We adjust every session to your dog's ability. Some of our most enthusiastic swimmers are well into their teens!
"How many sessions before I see recovery progress?"
Most rehab dogs show measurable improvement within 4–6 weekly sessions — better range of motion, returning muscle bulk, and less reluctance to use the affected limb. We track every visit so you can see real evidence, not guesswork.
"How much does it cost?"
Sessions start from just £35 for Owner In Pool and Group Classes, and £40 for Swim Coach and Weighty Woofers. Compare that to a vet hydrotherapy session at £50–80+ and you're getting outstanding value.
"What do I need to bring?"
Just your dog and a towel. If you're doing Owner In Pool, bring swimwear too. We provide life jackets, toys, and everything else needed. Free parking means you don't even need change for a meter.
WHAT DOG OWNERS SAY
What Cheshire Dog Owners Tell Us
"Brilliant for our working cocker who does agility. The swimming keeps her fit, builds strength in muscle groups that agility alone doesn't work, and she adores it."
James H.
Working Cocker Spaniel, 4 years
"Tried everything for our anxious collie — training, medication, behaviourists. Swimming has been the most effective thing we've done. She's a different dog after each session."
Natalie M.
Border Collie, 3 years
"I take my two cockapoos from Mere — they go absolutely mental with excitement when they realise where we're going. The pool is spotless and the water is lovely and warm."
Emma R.
Cockapoos, 2 & 4 years
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Got Questions? We've Got Answers
What surgeries benefit from swimming rehabilitation?
Cruciate ligament repair (TPLO/TTA), hip replacement, femoral head excision, spinal surgery (IVDD), fracture repair, limb amputation, and patella luxation surgery all benefit enormously from aquatic rehabilitation.
Can swimming help after amputation?
Yes — swimming is excellent for amputee dogs. It helps them build compensatory muscle, improve balance and coordination, and maintain cardiovascular fitness without overloading remaining limbs.
How does swimming prevent re-injury during recovery?
Water provides a completely controlled environment — no sudden movements, no jumping, no uneven terrain. Your dog gets intense exercise while the water protects healing tissues.
How soon after surgery can my dog start swimming?
Most vets recommend starting 10–14 days after suture removal, once wounds are fully healed. We always require vet clearance before beginning any post-surgical swimming programme.
My dog had a fracture repaired — when can they swim?
Typically 2–4 weeks after external fixator/cast removal, once your vet confirms healing is sufficient. Swimming then helps restore range of motion and rebuild the muscle lost during immobilisation.
My dog had spinal surgery — is swimming safe?
Swimming is excellent for post-spinal surgery rehabilitation. The buoyancy supports the spine while allowing gentle, controlled movement that helps maintain nerve pathways and rebuild core strength.
What if my dog is in too much pain to swim?
We assess on arrival. If swimming would push them, we use the ramp and shallow walking instead. Nothing is forced for any rehab dog from Mere.
